Dr. Donofrio recently received a top paper award from the Intercultural Communication Interest Group of the Central States Communication Association. His paper explores how food shows on television and streaming services mediate our experiences of foodways, ethnicity, and race by constructing narratives that work to produce and reproduce our senses of authenticity, in-group belonging, and otherness. His work applies critical intercultural communication theory to analyze a 2018 controversy that ultimately led to the mid-season cancellation of the award-winning culinary explorer show Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern.
